About the workshop

The Workshop Behind One Job Number

Servicing, panel and paint, tyres, detailing and window tinting have run from the same Frankston-Dandenong Road site since 2009.

Why the workshop was built this way

Dandenong Auto Works opened in 2009 as a mechanical workshop, and it grew by adding the trades customers kept asking for. The pattern was always the same phone call: the car was in for a service, something else was wrong, and the only answer available was the name of another business across town.

Rather than keep handing that work away, the bays were added one at a time. Panel and paint, then tyres and alignment, then detailing, then window film. The building is larger than a mechanical shop needs to be, because it has to hold six kinds of work without any of them getting in the way of the others.

How the one-site model works

One job number follows your car from the moment it arrives. Whoever answers the phone can see that the alignment is waiting on a control arm bush, that the bumper is in the booth, and that the detail is scheduled for the day after the paint has cured. Nothing is sent out and then chased by you.

The order of work is the real gain. An alignment done before a worn suspension component is replaced is a wasted alignment. A detail done before paint repair gets undone by masking tape. Window film fitted before a door glass is replaced goes in the bin. When all of it sits on one job, the sequence is decided by people who can see the whole car.

How a small team covers twelve makes

Twelve makes is a deliberate limit. Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Holden, Ford, Audi, Subaru, Nissan, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and Mazda each have published service schedules, oil approvals, torque figures and reset procedures, and holding that data properly for twelve brands is a very different proposition from claiming all makes and models.

In practice it means the scan tool coverage, the special tools and the parts channels are already in the building for the cars that actually live around here: utes, small hatchbacks, family wagons, hybrids and a steady stream of European sedans out of dealer warranty. If your car is not on the list, ask, and you will get a straight answer about whether it should come here.

What a customer day looks like

You arrive between 7:30 and 8:00, hand over the keys and confirm the two or three things you want looked at. If you cannot get here in hours, the key drop covers you. The car goes on the hoist, the arrival inspection is recorded, and you get a call once we know what is actually in front of us.

Anything found beyond the booking is quoted before it is touched. You collect one car with the log book stamped, the readings attached and the old parts in a box if you want them. Then you drive home, instead of driving to the second appointment.

How we work

Standards we hold ourselves to

  • Trading since 2009

The same workshop, on the same Frankston-Dandenong Road site, through every one of those years.

  • Nothing subcontracted

Panel, paint, tyres, detailing and window film all happen in this building, so nobody is waiting on a business you cannot ring.

  • Findings before invoices

Every reading we take is written down, and anything outside the original booking is quoted before a spanner touches it.

They found the actual cause of a vibration two other places had guessed at. Balanced the fronts, showed me the readout, and it has been smooth since.
