Mechanical Repairs and Fault Diagnosis

Brakes, suspension, clutch, cooling, timing, electrical and diagnostics on petrol, diesel and hybrid, with the fault proven before a part is ordered.

A code names a circuit, not a part. We test the circuit first.

The short version

Diagnosis before parts

A fault code is a symptom with a postcode attached. A lean running code on bank one tells you the mixture is wrong; it does not tell you whether that is a split intake hose, a contaminated air flow sensor, a lazy oxygen sensor or a leaking injector seal. Replacing parts in order of likelihood is a way of paying to find out.

So we read freeze-frame and live data, then test. A smoke test for vacuum leaks, a voltage drop test rather than a resistance guess, a cooling system held under pressure rather than waiting for the smell of coolant. You are told what failed and why before anything is ordered.

What makes ours different

Scan-tool diagnostics quoted before parts, so you pay to fix the fault rather than to replace guesses.

What you get

Included with your mechanical repairs

  • Diagnostic time quoted separately

You agree to the investigation as its own step, so the repair quote arrives after the fault is proven rather than instead of proving it.

  • Tested, not swapped

Smoke tests for vacuum leaks, voltage drop tests on suspect circuits, and cooling systems put under pressure to catch a seep before it becomes a head gasket.

  • Old parts kept for you

Whatever comes off the car stays in a box until you have seen it, unless you would rather we disposed of it for you.

  • Brakes measured and bedded

Rotor thickness checked against the minimum stamped on the hub, and new pads bedded in on a road test so they do not glaze and judder.

  • Petrol, diesel and hybrid

Particulate filter and injector work on diesels, and high-voltage isolation before anything goes near the orange cabling on a hybrid.

What we repair

Brakes, suspension and steering, clutches and manual gearbox work, cooling systems, timing belts and chains, head gaskets, water pumps, alternators and starters, charging and battery drain faults, air conditioning, and the electrical gremlins that have already had two parts thrown at them somewhere else. Petrol, diesel and hybrid, across the twelve makes we list.

Diesel work is a routine part of the day here, because of how many utes live on Dandenong roads. Injector leak-back testing, particulate filter differential pressure faults, forced regeneration where a filter is loaded rather than ruined, exhaust gas recirculation valves clogged by short-trip driving, and turbo actuators that stick before they fail outright.

How a repair job runs

You describe the symptom in the terms that matter: when it happens, cold or hot, at what speed, whether a light is on and whether it clears by itself. We road test wherever we can, because a noise you can hear at 60 km/h in third gear is worth more than a list of stored codes. Diagnostic time is quoted as its own step, so you are agreeing to an investigation rather than to a mystery.

Once the fault is proven we quote the repair with the parts named, and old parts are kept for you unless you say otherwise. Brake work includes measuring rotor thickness against the minimum figure stamped on the hub and bedding the new pads in on a road test, because pads that were never bedded glaze and then judder, and the workshop gets blamed for warped rotors that are not warped.

What people get wrong about repairs

The most expensive mistake is chasing a battery. A car that goes flat over four days usually has a parasitic draw, and that is measured with a clamp meter over time while the modules go to sleep, not solved by fitting a third battery. The second is coolant: mixing an organic acid coolant with the older green type drops both out of suspension and makes a sludge that blocks a radiator and a heater core, so we flush rather than top up when the history is unknown.

The third is clutches. When a clutch is replaced on a car with a dual-mass flywheel, that flywheel has to be checked for free play and heat damage while the gearbox is already out, because it is a five-minute check then and a second full job later. We look, we show you what we found, and you decide while the gearbox is still on the bench.

Questions we get

Mechanical Repairs questions, answered

Anything not covered here, ask the assistant in the corner or message (03) 9793 4820 on WhatsApp.

Reading a code takes a minute and only tells you which circuit reported a problem. Working out which component in that circuit failed, and why, takes equipment and time: a smoke machine, a scope, a pressure tester, live data on a road test. What you are paying for is the part not being replaced twice.

Usually not warped in the sense of being bent. The common cause is uneven pad material transferred onto the rotor face, often from pads that were never bedded in or from holding the pedal hard at a light after heavy braking. We measure runout and thickness before condemning anything, because machining a rotor that was fine will not stop the judder coming back.

It depends on the engine, not the badge, and plenty of makes use both across their range. Send the engine code off the compliance plate or the VIN and we will tell you which you have and what interval applies. A belt is a scheduled replacement with a hard limit in kilometres and years; a chain is inspected, and a stretched one usually announces itself as a camshaft-to-crankshaft correlation fault before it jumps.

Yes, starting with why it is not cold rather than with a regas. A system that has lost gas lost it somewhere, so refilling without finding the leak means paying twice. We check pressures on both sides, look for oil traces at the usual leak points and pressure test where needed. A condenser packed with road grit is a surprisingly common cause of poor cooling in traffic.

We service hybrids and do the conventional mechanical work on them, with the high-voltage system isolated before anything goes near the orange cabling. That covers brakes, suspension, cooling, inverter coolant and the traction battery cooling intake, which clogs with cabin dust on several models. Repairs inside a battery pack itself are outside what we do, and we will say so rather than open it.
